Raw, vegan, and awesome. Those are the three main components of Emily von Euw's blog, her cookbooks, and her life.
The Vancouver-based college student (yes, she's only 20!) created This Rawsome Vegan Life in 2011 to sing the praises of raw, healthy, cruelty-free foods and to share her mouth-watering recipes that range from chocolate peanut butter cream pie to kale salad. But the blog also delves into Emily's inspiring personal journey and experiences. It's a compelling, relatable look at how food and life are truly intertwined.
As her writing career blooms, Emily also happens to be in the middle of a closet transformation. "I've been in radio and TV interviews and meeting with local businesses, and in those situations my appearance really matters," she wrote in a post yesterday, noting that , until recently, her daily uniform consisted mostly of oversize men's clothing. "On a personal scale, this means I need to start dressing a bit more professional. I got rid of all my old clothes and am now slowly rebuilding my wardrobe with good quality, new clothes that actually fit my figure."
Perfect timing for us to catch up with the blogger for a look at her evolving style, the future, and a few of her favorite things. More awesomeness ahead.
Minimalist and functional.
Advice for creating a cool cruelty-free look:
Check out thrift stores and -- if you have a bit of cash to spend -- organic, ethical clothing stores in your area. Look at all your makeup and beauty production including cleaners, shampoos, toothpaste, etc. Look up every single ingredient and throw out the toxic junk. It's poisoning your beautiful body. If it doesn't list ingredients, throw it out -- the company is probably using such scary stuff that they don't even want to tell you [about]. Start replacing your beauty products with environmentally-friendly, cruelty-free, natural products. Any cosmetic companies supported by PETA, Petit Vour, or Vegan Cuts are good choices. I also love Luminance Skin Care, Buds & Scrubs, Morrocco Method, and Delicious Skin. Alternatively, if you want to go the cheap route, simply check out Crunchy Betty for super simple skin care solutions. I use the oil-cleansing method for my skin, and I clean my hair and teeth with baking soda.
Go-to beauty product:
The Ellovi lip butter I have right now -- it's moisturizing and tinted red from a flower extract. But I also just love myself, and that is probably the most important beauty product a person can have.
Favorite item of clothing:
A floral print dress I found in the maternity section of a thrift store.
Most fabulous shoes:
My 4 inch vegan leather platform boots. They empower me.
Night vs. morning:
I used to be a night owl all the way, and loved sleeping in. But in the past few years I have begun to love waking up early and staying busy all day, it makes me feel more accomplished. I guess I am a bit of both.
Most beloved book:
It changes depending on what mood I am in, but I adore One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
I love all animals equally, but currently there is a special place in my heart for pigs. They are one of the smartest creatures on the planet.
Best food ever:
Ahhhh, so difficult! I would say sushi or smoothies. I could live off either, but preferably both.
Just work work work. Going back to school in a week to get my degree in history. I am also going to be focusing on publishing more posts, photos, recipes, and videos all about the vegan life. I am trying to live in the moment as much as possible, but it's challenging when I am trying to plan my future. I am such a Virgo.
