Even with the rise of ethical apparel, online shopping can be a bit of trial and error for the cruetly-free fashionista. How many times have you spotted a bag or pair of shoes that you loved, only to be disappointed when you clicked and found out it was made of leather? Thankfully, a handful of exclusively vegan e-commerce stores are making it easier to shop 100% cruelty-free. One of the latest, Vegan Unite, launched in May with a community-focused mindset.
Similar to Etsy in its marketplace-style format, Vegan Unite brings together merchants that sell only cruelty-free products. While the start-up is still evolving, and the site is extremely broad in its offerings -- everything from clothing to dog treats -- it is divided into categories that make it simple to ferret out stylish pieces like Canope Verde's Pomelo clutch and Soutache Shop's Eastern-inspired jewelry.
Founder Cosondra Sjostrom said there's more on the horizon. "I envision Vegan Unite becoming the number one resource for all vegan, cruelty-free, and eco-friendly shopping online, as well as a hub for new creatives to start their shops and start selling to the community," said the Los Angeles-based CEO, whose resume also includes acting and publishing.
The mutli-tasker shared some insight into her sartorial style, favorite local haunts, and more.
Street casual. I have been trying not to wear all black, as that is my typical staple color.
Favorite non-internet shopping destination:
The Farmers Market in Silverlake has really great vintage booths. I always enjoy checking out the styles when shopping for veggies.
Cruetly-free style tip:
You can shop compassionately and still have a stylish, sleek look. You just have to pay attention to the companies that you are purchasing from.
Best places to eat vegan in LA.:
Project Taco on Wilshire -- my favorite item there is the Thai Peanut Taco with Beyond Meat chicken. Fala Bar on Melrose -- they have a full vegan menu and the best spicy falafels in LA. Mornings Nights Cafe in Silverlake is my favorite place to go to on Saturdays to get get a bite, coffee, and walk around the Farmers Market right outside.
Must-watch films and TV:
The X-Files, eXistenZ, Donnie Darko, and A Beautiful Mind are a few of my favorites. I love mind-bending sci-fi movies.
